| Introducing
Burston Nurseries: |
| Burston Nurseries became a limited
company more than 30 years ago, but the business began back
in the 1930's on a site adjacent to the present one. Founded
by WT Pearson and trading originally as market gardeners,
the business has developed to its present position as a major
supplier of bedding plants and roses to the Garden Centre
industry. It is still owned by the Pearson family whose traditional
values of excellent quality and service remain. |
|
| Burstons has progressed throughout
its lifetime but in particular has undergone significant expansion
and development since the early 1980's when consumer interest
in plants and garden products was building to its zenith. The
holding at St Albans exceeds 20 hectares and includes on site
4 hectares of glasshouses, modern offices, warehousing facilities
and a cold storage facility for roses. Being intersected by
the M25 London Orbital and very close to the M1 the business
is assured of unrivalled road links to its customers. |
| Production here
is focussed on two principal crops, bedding and roses. We
are acknowledged as one of the UK market leaders in these
crops, both in terms of production and presentation. Our bedding
plants are marketed in a polystyrene cell tray supported with
colour labelling and a range of correx boards. |
| |
Quality is the
key word, and this is equally true of our roses. Over a period
of time when consumer interest in roses was widely acknowledged
to be falling, burstons breathed new life into the market
by improving plant quality and all aspects of the packaging
and presentation. Roses are marketed under the Burstin into
colour branding and in recent years we have added new ranges
to our list, such as the well known Special Moments Collection
in blue pots. |
| In addition to the wide range of plants
we list, we are always happy to listen to customers' specific
requirements and any requests to grow or source particular varieties
will be treated sympathetically. |
| Meet The Burston
Nurseries Team: |
| Paul Young, Director /
Business Manager
Paul came to Burstons back in the Dark Ages, 1981, having
previously worked as an Inspector of Taxes. He combines his
overall management duties with overseeing the smooth running
of the Nursery office and has also been known to get his hands
dirty from time to time driving lorries on plant deliveries. |
James
Alcaraz, Director / Nursery Manager
James returned to Burstons in October 2002 after
a 3 year sabbatical running his own plant merchandising business.
Whereas James’ former position here was office and field
based, we thought his recent experiences left him suited to
a more active, practical role on the Nursery. In his (limited)
spare time, his hobbies include sailing and rugby. |
Stephen Lowe, Senior
Grower
Steve is in his second spell at Burstons having
first joined as a callow youth from the local horticultural
college, back in the 1960's. He returned in 1985 after working
in the building industry and soon found his touch again growing
quality bedding for us. At his happiest amongst the plants
and blessed with an untidy beard, he is our very own David
Bellamy. |
Roger
Jenyon, Senior Grower
Roger is a very experienced grower who for many years ran
his own bedding nursery in Hertfordshire. On "retirement"
he managed our satellite Nursery at Redbourn before transferring
across to St Albans when we expanded the glass area in the
mid-1990's. Roger has his life well-sorted; he spends 9
months working for us and 3 months relaxing at his holiday
home in Italy. |
Sue Groves, Propagation
Manager
After having a family, Sue chose to re-launch
her career at Burstons in 1984, working part-time on a variety
of tasks before finding her niche in the propagation unit
and taking charge of the department in 1993. Sue's seedlings
are the source of our excellent bedding plants and the fridge
magnets that she collects are a source of great amusement
to all who read them.

Mario Andrews, Team
Leader
Mario's Burston career began in 1991 working
at our satellite Nursery in Redbourn before his transfer to
St Albans. He was appointed a Team Leader in 2000. His enthusiasm
and organisational skills are an inspiration to those who
work with him. In fact he's pretty enthusiastic about everything
he does - who else do you know who's seen AC/DC live 30 times? |
